悲喜Michael Jackson之死

年初MJ病危時,我總在想他是真的會撐不住了。但他那次竟然沒死,還宣佈要開復出演唱會。我聽著那些消息,心裡也不感到特別高興。我心底裡總有種奇怪預感,覺得他命不久矣。今早聽到他身故的消息,當下是非常驚訝,但也有一種奇異的釋然——這對流行之王本人,何嘗不是一個終極的解脫。

世界要毀滅一個人多麼容易,你爬得越高,四周的氧氣便越見稀薄。在音樂史上Michael Jackson根本是天之驕子,現在多少所謂跳舞的歌手在台上不過是重覆著A貨質素的MJ舞步。但這些也根本是毀掉一個人的天資,他飛得太高了,太陽——觀眾——終於令他的翅膀熔掉,迎接他的是八十年代之後的下墜。我毫不懷疑MJ的精神是出了問題,在他那個位置,誰都注定是要瘋的。我將他的整容視為一種心理壓力的渲泄,這隱喻不是再明顯不過了嗎?整容,換臉。不欲再看見這張帶給他無盡壓力的臉。

死亡在它悲劇性的背面,又有一片寂靜的安詳。聊勝於無,是所有喜歡Michael Jackson的人的一點安撫。其實自己是喜多於悲——現在這位King of Pop終於可以躺下來休息了。

逃不出camp精魔掌。喜歡的男音樂人,盡是不同年代的camp精:David Bowie早已收心養性,婚都結了兩次、Brett Anderson其實在Suede解散前夕已略顯憔悴,現在更加變成了治癒系音樂詩人(這形容詞很老套,但如今的Brett確是如此)。

英式冶艷沉寂已久,對我來說,由Chris Corner組成的一人樂團IAMX實在是不得了的新大陸,讓我過足英倫樂風的癮。能電能搖的Chris Corner無論聲線身段音樂都繼承了Bowie等先輩的精神,IAMX在零九年出版的【Kingdom Of Welcome Addiction】可說是自己在今年聽得最為興奮的大碟,黯暗華麗的電子音效繁花似錦。哦我差點忘了電子音樂是多麼神奇的樂類,Chris Corner更是將之使得入化出神,營造出迷幻燥動的神韻。Chris Corner的聲線極具戲劇性,音域闊得詭異,在《Nature Of Inviting》裡從主歌過渡到副歌一段,歌聲顫然變調,起初以為是一段女聲和音,但其實那依然是Chris Corner本尊——不得了的張力。

比起先前兩張大碟,【Kingdom Of Welcome Addiction】變得更加旋律化,triphop式的幽遊和歐陸電子味道換上正宗的英倫曲式,《Think Of England》或《The Great Shipwreck Of Life》等快板電子小曲其實深具流行性。終場的《Running》旋律則是一片樸素美麗的白,一反整張專輯濃艷妖冶的氣氛——其實這種編排在前作【Kiss + Swallow】已見於碟末一曲扣人心弦的《Missile》。

逃不出camp精魔掌。如果Suede散發的是大麻煙香,那IAMX則是一抹包在鈔票裡的可卡因。剛看到一則新聞稱英國國內的吸毒者足有一百萬,亦是歐陸最大的可卡因消費國。啊陰雨冷霧的英倫,怪不得盛產那麼出色的音樂。

野仔【People are People】玩味的優劣

孤陋寡聞,原來少爺占等人有一隊叫「野仔」的樂隊,並且已經活動了幾年。音樂部份大部分是由壞碑唇的Chris負責,填詞的則是少爺占。聽《People are People》,不要看維基上說隊名的由來是甚麼「他們發覺香港人沒有自我;雖然口口聲聲說自己是香港人,但卻執著BNO護照,國籍也寫了British(英國人),就跟野仔一樣」,野仔的音樂倒沒甚麼艱澀大義,每一曲都是非常平易近人的小格局。Chris也沒帶來太多壞碑唇的電氣感,音樂亦維持很傳統很熱血的搖滾編制。

看牌面就知道,野仔並沒甚麼野心,歌裡歌外都有濃烈的玩票味道。當然有好有壞。好是市場局限少,就如開首四曲竟都是快板噪動的嘈歌。要是其他近期冒上檯面的本地樂隊,必然無法不夾一兩首慢歌來「中和」一番;壞的當然是因為樂隊並非要揚名立萬,歌詞演唱錄音等細節做得不好的地方,當然亦多。尤其是少爺占似乎不擅寫如此正經八百的歌詞,但笨絀中又見真切。印象較深的兩首:《成田來未》講拋下一切遠走的情懷,歌詞感覺不大,但那段電吉他的開場,乃至後段獨奏的從容不迫,非常英倫味的動聽,卻是全碟的亮點﹔不插電的《周慕雲》一派閒適自在,與歌詞中情感不能見光的片段又出奇的相配。

聽罷《People are People》,對野仔音樂倒不記得多少,反而是對少爺占一直沒由來的厭惡卻減退不少。這張專輯告訴我們,人前表現再浮誇,內心都有一個世界的。

原來可以不寫。近日除了寫我的小說還是寫我的小說。一天大約寫一萬字左右。但這故事比我想像中更長一點,希望能在十三四萬之內完成。

當然,手眼腦袋都快要廢了所以就不寫博。發現不寫博,不讀博,也有一種異樣的自由。我知道這是個多事之秋,我又是個好事之徒,平日總忍不住去寫去讀。最近我卻有難得的沉澱,一種魅惑的抽離。我的一心一意難得只在一件事上,而不是四處惹草沾花——雖然我每天都是累得幾乎要死掉,但我卻有一種難得的入定。外間物事,雖然流淌依舊,但它們卻不上我心,它們如此進了我的腦裡,又是原模原樣的離開去。

我覺得自己在很遠很遠的地方,似乎不願回來的樣子。但我終究還是要回來。不需上帝,沉澱過後,我也是新造的人。

PS 最近伴寫的除Manson之外,都是一堆舊歌。另有新認識的年輕英倫樂隊The Horrors的新碟【Primary Color】,亦有驚喜之處。

Devour: Pain’s not ashamed to repeat itself

樂迷聽歌去到某個日子之後,便開始對「情歌」皺眉,然後轉而膜拜題材先於歌曲、態度重於詣藝的歌手。歌曲本身平平無奇無所謂,「獨特」販賣的是一種樂迷的感覺良好,多於耳朵接收的東西。而這個現像近年也開始在本地出現,亦不啻是一種另類的社會進步。

不是要說甚麼,而是詠嘆當Marilyn Manson不再高舉反基督和社會批判的大旗,歌曲的格局反而比以前開揚。專輯之連貫當然不及早期,但佳句卻來得更好。像【The High End of Low】的《Devour》,是一首挺病態的情歌。Twiggy在主歌彈奏的一段吉他很有神彩,但整首歌最攝人的卻是歌詞。但我只是喜歡而已,不是投入。我已經好了。著魔通常是為了愛情,但亦最不值得。而這歌詞實在寫得非常,非常的出色。

Almost every fan of Manson said that the previous album Eat Me Drink Me is a shitty work and perhaps the worst album that Marilyn Manson has ever made. In fact the album is not really shitty but EMDM is not suitable to be a Marilyn Manson album in Fans’ mind. As the satanic gimmick artist, Marilyn Manson would really become outdated if he still repeats the old market skill, like tearing a religion book on the concert platform.

I know it’s repetitive to say I quiet like EMDM in the band’s career. It’s not a manson-kind album due to its impressive dark and silent atmosphere. Most guitar solos provided by Tim Skold are gusto. Honestly the depressed Manson is more artistic, sounds and looks like a musician finally, although the previous albums such as Mechanical Animals and Holly Wood have more melodic song structure. Personally I am more impressed by the emotional one that I told before.

Following EMDM, Skold parted and Twiggy is back to be the co-songwriter and producer. Probably because Twiggy is the best member that Marilyn Manson has ever have; with his contribution, The New album The High End of Low sounds pretty violent, noisy and fluent, especially the dirty bass lines. It’s pity to say the record is much more plentiful than EMDM and Golden Age of Grotesque, but the melody still can’t compare with Mechanical Animals. The latest Manson sounds still a little bit depressed in the lyrics, and now he is dare to write more and dig inside to release personal feeling in the song, with the symbolic metaphor like the first song Devour.

Instead of sensitive or emotional song, political thing is still market friendly. We’re From America is unquestionable the most outstanding one in the record. Unfortunately I don’t think Marilyn Manson satirizes what he truly means. A debatable topic is good for commercial as we all know. But who cares? Fortunately, music like this makes people want to shake the head is simply what WE want. Unfortunately, nowadays we see Marilyn Manson has nothing new to say anymore. The music by the band is reborn, but not Brian’s soul.

Brett Anderson第三張個人作品名為【Slow Attack】

Brett Anderson有新消息:

The album is finished and the title is Slow Attack. As yet unsequenced and un-mixed , it will probably contain up to 12 completely new tracks mainly written by Leo and myself. heavily featuring woodwind , it is fuller,stranger and more complex than the last two solo albums and influenced by Leo’s command of atmospherics and his classical training. The decision to use woodwind as a primary colour on our palette of sound was inspired by the work of Mark Hollis , an artist whose constant devellopment and distorsion of the pop model we both found fascinating.

However, don’t expect the record to sound like Talk Talk or anything else for that matter..we have carved these influences into our own shape and the outcome is a record which to me sounds like nothing i have ever done before.It goes without saying that i am immensely proud of this body of work and extremely excited for the world to hear it.

I anticipate that it will be released in autumn this year but you’ll forgive me if at this stage i cannot be more specific. of course live shows will follow , the format of which i have yet to decide. one thing is certain though, they will be different from those on the Wilderness tour.

按Brett的說法,這張仍品似乎能夠一流前兩張專輯越見沉鬱哀傷的主色調。Leo Abrahams曾接受傳統音樂學院,早年曾創作大量古典音樂作品,後來才漸漸運用更多吉他。Brett這次與Leo Abrahams合作新碟,加上照片所見之管弦樂編制,令人「擔心」這會是一張更加【Wilderness】的唱片,但看見Brett如此說,這次的主要樂器還加上木管類。我等鍾情《Love Is Dead》之豐富多於一切的粉絲似乎可以放下心來。

Marilyn Manson – Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin-Geddon video

Marilyn Manson第二張單曲是歌名到歌詞都不知所云,計算中有種亂來、亂來中亦有計算的《Arma-Goddamn-Motherfuckin-Geddon》。是新碟的第一支MV,並已開始在官網上串流。這次MV的重點似乎是一種極其燥動的剪接。全片幾乎找不到一個超過半秒的分鏡。而吉他和貝斯手Twiggy Ramirez亦「有幸」佔了幾個鏡頭。

新碟的symbol很可能是MV裡出現的$(也太露骨了吧)。值得一提的是Manson在片未被他的粉絲圍毆,頗有一種自嘲的況味。

Brett Anderson Live in London and Queen Elizabeth Hall

我們對活著的傳奇總是又愛又恨,對Suede或Brett Anderson亦如是。我們只會苛評心裡覺得最好的,誰會苛評連歌也唱不好的那些。潛意思裡,歌迷其實是想Brett死掉的。最好在Dog Man StarComing Up的輝煌時期死去,嗯,最好是吸毒過量而死。像Kurt Cobain般死於盛年,那麼Suede就是一個不死的傳奇。因為我們覺得故事似乎應該如此發展。人們都不欲看見自己崇拜的東西會墮落、會變老、或者唱高音時會不夠氣。

但Brett沒死真好。

零七年的時候,Brett Anderson開始他的solo計劃,在大不列顛作了幾場現場表演。並發行了三張限量的(各一千五百張)現場錄音,作為給第一張大碟的一種宣傳。Brett如此講及自己的同名專輯:

這張專輯中有很多死亡的味道,你聽得越多,那種死亡的氣息就越明顯,我不知道這是為甚麼,但我肯定這不是給喜歡Beautiful ones的人的一張專輯,它們是不同的感覺的,對音樂不同的詮釋。

所謂死亡的味道,就是諸如他介紹「its a song about fucking」並唱起《Infinite Kiss》的時候,那種緩緩上升的濃烈氣氛。性愛被他演繹成一種最貼近死亡的活動。在快感的頂峰,我們也曾驚鴻一瞥意識底層的靜寂,像面臨死亡之本身。《To The Winter》、《Love Is Dead》等氣氛相近,就是一陣一陣揮之不去的悲壯。

然同場acoustic改造後的山羊皮舊曲,則是一陣未曾有過的清麗縈繞——渡盡劫波後,生命仍是有其寧謐的一面。只以吉他弦樂伴奏的《Saturday Night》及《Still Life》就叫人聽得幾乎落淚。

Brett沒死真好。所以今天我們仍能聽到如此美好的歌。

豬流感:It’ll be alright, it’ll be okay

北美流感好、豬流感也好,瘟疫在墨西哥(南方公園九成會在新劇中大玩相關素材了,因為墨西哥是南方公園時常拿來取笑的其中一個國家)及美國爆發的時候,香港人已經成了驚弓之鳥,像世界末日般。零三年對於港人來說,是政治參與的分水嶺、也是夢魘。當年經濟承接著九七年金融風暴後未曾好轉過的頹勢,已瑧水深火熱之境,而沙士病毒又在當時大規模爆發。港人及一群殉職醫護人員落得如此,亦要多得醫管局及衛生署的無能領導不少。

顧經濟比性愛更重要的港人,本已受金融海嘯摧殘,三魂不見七魄;現在又多來一個豬流感,更加覺得大難臨頭、厭世絕望。要來的始終要來,現在交通太過發達,人口流動之廣之快,瘟疫不是你說防就能防的。以前發豬瘟發雞瘟,一條村、一個鄉、最多至一個縣,人死光了,病毒也就將自己毀了。也沒現在的世界性大爆發。人們以前高呼全球一體化嘛,還以為這是大勢所趨,要識時務呢。最後是怎麼樣?經濟、瘟疫問題一來,大家就一鑊熟。東張分望又來教大家選購口罩、或者找來些甚麼二打六「以中醫角度解釋豬流感的成因」諸如此類。嚇得一眾師奶快快落街搶購一箱口罩放在家中、或者一眾張慧慈的「現代女性」粉絲們馬上打電話給男友:「我要你買口罩俾我!」

讀歷史,總是覺得人類是種奇怪的生物。無數的天災人禍,無日無之,形近上帝對人類的天譴,但人類仍是活了下來。不是靠宗教、不是靠政府,而是一種深信事情「總會好的」的主觀願望。這個主觀願望與「上帝會保守我們」其實同樣渺茫,而事情發展多數不從人願。但從宏觀的角度來看,事情真是如此運行的。文明去到最低微、物質去到更貧瘠,那時的人還是活下去、繁衍自己的部落、城市。而他們撐得住了,前面通常會有一條較平坦的路——你都把險峻的用腿走完大半了。

最近發覺Youtube多了一點Suede(相熟的都知道我迷死了suede)的現場錄影,是從DVD中分拆出來的,所以聲畫俱佳。Saturday Night是我接觸此樂隊的第一首(其實是因為明哥在現場cover過)歌,搖滾史上不知道有哪首抒情作品,情緒能來得如此複雜,縈繞腦間。那是一種悲壯的樂觀。生命就是不由自主,苦的部份還是要吃。不能像看AV般飛走無謂的情節。

即使世界正在變壞,我們始終要慢慢的、一步一步的向前走。
